How to Write Song Lyrics When You Feel Stuck

Creative blocks are common, even for experienced writers. A blank page can feel intimidating, but a small change in process can make it easier to find the next line.

Start with a concrete observation instead of trying to write a perfect chorus. Describe a place, a sound, a conversation or a small moment from memory. Freewriting for five minutes without editing can reveal phrases worth keeping. You can also begin with a title, a question or a rhythm tapped on a desk.

If the first idea feels too broad, narrow it. Rather than writing about love in general, write about one unanswered message or one familiar street after a goodbye. Specific details create a scene and give the listener something to hold on to. Try changing the narrator or writing from the other person's point of view if the draft feels predictable.

Separate drafting from editing. Give yourself permission to write imperfect lines, then return later to improve clarity, sound and structure. A short daily writing habit is often more productive than waiting for inspiration to arrive fully formed.
